CodShot VS Code extension showing snippets and a developer workspace
QUICK START

Get connected in 5 steps.

No command line setup or complex configuration. Just install, create a key, and connect.

01

Install the extension

In VS Code, open Extensions (Ctrl+Shift+X on Windows/Linux), search for CodShot, and select Install. You can also use the official Marketplace link.

Open Visual Studio Marketplace
02

Sign in to CodShot

Sign in to your existing account, or create a free one. Your snippets, Projects, and Collections remain in your CodShot workspace.

03

Create your API key

In CodShot, go to My Settings → API keys. Enter a name (such as “VS Code – desktop”), choose the access you need, and select Create API key. Copy the new key now—it is shown only once.

Choose read access for browsing and inserting snippets, or write access to also create private snippets. Write access includes read access. Never share your key.
Open My Settings
04

Connect inside VS Code

Open the CodShot view in the VS Code Activity Bar. Under Connection, select Connect CodShot, paste your API key into the masked field, and select Connect.

The extension stores your key in VS Code SecretStorage. Disconnect removes the local key; to invalidate it on the server, use Revoke in My Settings.
05

Start using your snippets

Browse Projects and nested Collections, search your snippets, open code in a read-only preview, and use Copy or Insert. To capture new code, select text or use your active file and explicitly choose Save to CodShot.

Save creates a new private snippet in your chosen location. It does not overwrite an existing snippet or automatically synchronize files.

Yes. You can connect using a FREE, PLUS, or PRO account. Your plan limits and access are enforced by CodShot.

Make sure your API key has Workspace write access, your account is active, and your plan allows another snippet. If you only granted read access, create a key with write access and reconnect.

API keys are displayed only once when created. Create a new key in My Settings, use Change API key in VS Code, and revoke the old key if it is no longer needed.

An API key expires after 90 days. Generate another key in My Settings and update your VS Code connection.

No. Disconnect only removes the key from your local VS Code connection. Use Revoke under My Settings → API keys to disable it on CodShot.

No. Snippet previews are read-only, and Save creates a new private snippet only when you choose it. There is no automatic GitHub sync or background code upload.

Your next useful snippet is already within reach.

Install CodShot for VS Code, connect your workspace, and keep reusable code close to where you work.
